Mobil Commits to New Environment Improvement Plan

29 August 2007

Mobil Altona Refinery’s seventh Environment Improvement Plan (EIP) was signed today at a ceremony attended by key representatives from Mobil and the local community.

The EIP renews the Refinery's commitment to continuously improving its environmental performance, and commits to a number of new environmental improvement opportunities.

“The EIP is developed every three years and involves extensive input from a sub-committee comprising residents and members of the local community, the Hobsons Bay City Council, City West Water, the EPA and, of course, the Altona Refinery, so we have broad representation from the community,” Glenn Henson, Manager Refining, Australia & NZ, said.

“This sub-committee identifies opportunities for significant environmental improvement, and develops a detailed action plan with goals and timeframes for completion.

“We take very seriously the commitments we make under the EIP and aim to maintain our record of continuous improvement in the Refinery's environmental performance.”

The Refinery’s first EIP signed in 1991 was the first agreement of its type ever struck between EPA, the community and local industry, and unique in that the Refinery voluntarily committed to taking measures to reduce its impact on the surrounding community and environment.

EIPs are now commonplace in Victoria, and the EPA, the Altona Refinery and local community have been instrumental in developing a process that has become the benchmark for industry in the state.

“After more than a decade since its inception, the EIP remains an integral part of the Refinery's management of key environmental programs. Everyone involved should feel very proud of the process we have worked together to build,” said Mr Henson.

Some of the initiatives the Altona Refinery has committed to implement under this EIP include:
  • The reduction of Greenhouse Gas emissions through the implementation of a number of projects to reduce energy use and flaring
  • The implementation of a Mobil landscaping master plan
  • A reduction in fugitive emissions through an upgrade in the Leak Detection and Repair program
  • A reduction in odours through the implementation of 'No Oil to Sewer' best practices.
