Western region community groups received a funding boost thanks to the volunteering efforts of Mobil employees.
ExxonMobil Australia, parent company of Mobil, recognises the volunteering work of its employees by providing $1,000 grants direct to the community organisations nominated by its employees under the company’s Volunteer Involvement Program.
Employees from the Mobil Altona Refinery and Mobil Yarraville Terminal successfully applied for the volunteering grants to assist schools, surf life saving clubs, pre-schools and scout groups. Nearly 2,000 volunteer hours were contributed by Mobil employees to help Western suburbs community groups in the past year.
Schools to benefit from the work of the volunteers and Mobil’s grants include Bayside Secondary College, which will use the funds to provide a student leadership award. The Mobil funds will also help Wembley (Yarraville), Williamstown North and St Augustine's (Yarraville) primary schools to enhance literacy programs and purchase library books.
The Mobil volunteering grants enable groups to purchase much needed equipment and enhance facilities. New rescue and training equipment will be purchased by Altona Life Saving Club, and 1st Iramoo Scout Group (Yarraville) will use its grant to buy new tents and camping stoves. Melton and Werribee Fire Brigades have also received a Mobil grant.
Glenn Henson, Mobil Altona Refinery Manager, said that the employee volunteering grants program is an example of one of the ways that the company supports local community groups in areas where we operate.
“Many of our employees are active community volunteers and we are pleased to recognise the time and effort they give to community groups,” he said.
A record number of ExxonMobil Australia employees applied for the volunteering grants this year, which totalled $158,000. ExxonMobil employees in Australia gave over 10,000 hours of their personal time to support community initiatives.
