Basic chemicals: petrochemical building blocks

ExxonMobil Chemical has over sixty years of experience in producing petrochemical base products. These are obtained from the steam crackers or by separating the refineries' product flows.

This extensive experience is a guarantee for high quality products, which is further reinforced by the fact that ExxonMobil Chemical has never shied away from new challenges. The company was using computer systems as early as the nineteen seventies to calculate the optimum composition of the hydrocarbon mixtures used to produce countless petrochemical products. Many of the basic chemical plants are therefore located close to refineries or natural gas processing installations, where the required starting materials are inexpensive and available in large quantities.

There are two major families of petrochemical base products: olefins and aromatics. For many years, ExxonMobil Chemical has been the largest olefin producer and certainly plans to hold onto this position in the future.

This is good news for clients that use polymers and intermediates, because the company uses most of the ethylene olefins and propylene olefins to produce its own polyethylenes, polypropylenes and other polymers, glycols and other derivatives, such as the base components for synthetic lubricants.

The aromatic plants, including the one located in Rotterdam-Botlek, use the most advanced technologies to extract the aromatic product families of benzene, toluene and xylenes, from the flows in the refineries. Click here for more information on the production of aromatics.
