Car fuels and lubricants are made from crude oil. But did you know that petroleum is also the basis for products such as asphalt, candles and propellants? The ExxonMobil refineries in Antwerp and Rotterdam are major suppliers of a number of oil products that form the raw materials for these and other applications. In short, ExxonMobil doesn't waste a single drop of oil.

 Bitumen

 Bitumen is the heaviest and most viscous part that refineries can extract from a barrel of oil. It is produced in a special plant at the Antwerp refinery from the bottom product of the vacuum distillers. Bitumen is used as a binding agent for asphalt but is also used in the roofing and carpet industry and for making sheets of corrugated papier-mâché water repellant.

Aerosols (propellants)

 ExxonMobil is also a leading manufacturer of propellants on the aerosol market. This product finds its way into the cosmetics industry and to manufacturers of a wide range of household items. They are made from isobutene, butane and propane, gasses that are created at different stages in the refining process. The product is entirely odorless after the final purification step in the special propellant plant at our Rotterdam refinery. Needless to say, this is an absolute prerequisite for clients in the cosmetic industry.

ExxonMobil supplies even more special products that have been extracted from oil, such as quality waxes and wax emulsions for the candle industry, the electrotechnical industry (insulation), the paper and textile industry and rubber manufacturers. Quality and purity are essential properties for ExxonMobil white oils. They are used in the food and pharmaceutical industry, and have to comply with the strict rules associated with these sectors.
