civic and community
The ExxonMobil Green Team Summer Youth Program provides employment for youth in nine U.S. communities, including Baytown, Texas where the Program was implemented in 2007.
ExxonMobil supports priorities of local communities adjacent to our facilities. In 2007, contributions totaling $52.8 million
were made directly to civic groups and community service organizations around the world. Of this amount, more than $35.3 million benefited communities outside of the United States.
Outside the United States, our community involvement extends beyond philanthropy to job creation, support for local economies and businesses, and development of community infrastructure. In the Akwa Ibom and Rivers States of Nigeria, our community development program focuses on two key areas of need — infrastructure development and empowerment training. In 2007, we provided more than $6 million for the construction of roads, electricity, water supply, and skills training to Nigerian communities. In Sakhalin and the Ul’chi District of Russia, we provided more than $5 miilion to build and repair public roads and bridges so that local residents can travel safely. In Kazakhstan, our share of TCO and Agip KCO funding of water and gas supply projects, road repair, and construction of apartments totaled more than $8 million.
In Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, workers are trained in palm oil processing.
We actively support programs addressing youth development around the world. In the United States, the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program provides college students with paid internships with nonprofit organizations. Administered in 16 communities in 10 states, this youth employment program instills a lasting appreciation for the importance of community service. A similar program, the ExxonMobil Green Team Summer Youth Program, provides summer employment for high-school youth in eight U.S. communities where participants support park and neighborhood cleanup, beautification, and construction projects.
In the Krasnodar Kray region of Russia, ExxonMobil made a two-year grant to the Center of Social Development and Information Foundation to fund six youth centers which will provide local at-risk youth with structured after-school activities including study assistance and professional counseling. In Qatar, we continued our long-time support for the Al Shaffallah Center for Children with Special Needs whose purpose is to help children with disabilities to become active members of the community.
Through formal Volunteer Involvement Programs in many countries around the world, ExxonMobil encourages employees and retirees to contribute their time and talent to their communities. In 2007, more than 15,300 ExxonMobil employees, retirees, and their families donated more than 686,000 volunteer hours to more than 5,400 charitable organizations in 29 countries through company-sponsored programs. In recognition of these efforts, ExxonMobil and its affiliates donated more than $8.8 million to the charitable organizations where they volunteered.
