keeping our workforce healthy and disease-free
The health of our workforce, now and in the future, is a significant concern for us. We ensure that our employees and their families have access to programs that can be effective in preventing and slowing the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. We also encourage contractors and other business partners to incorporate similar programs into their own businesses to enable them to adequately manage risk.
Throughout our operations, we conduct health risk assessments to analyze the prevalence of HIV in the background population; understand risk factors for HIV transmission in the general population; evaluate the quality of local and national health services infrastructure and its capacity in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of HIV/AIDS; and determine the level of access to care provided to employees and families via company health plans.
To further mitigate risks to employees, we then determine if a workplace prevention program is necessary. In parts of the world, such as sub-Saharan Africa, where we determined that health services infrastructure was generally insufficient and company health plans did not always provide access to treatment of HIV/AIDS as for any other disease, we developed a comprehensive workplace prevention program, StopAIDS, in 2004.
