Baton Rouge Chemical Plant (BRCP)
History
The Baton Rouge Chemical Plant began as a separate facility in 1940. Since then, it has introduced a number of technological firsts. In 1931, for example,when the site was still a chemical unit within the Refinery, it produced butyl rubber for the first time in history.

The Chemical Plant is staffed by more than 1,800 employees and contractors and manufacture nearly 6.9 billion pounds of petrochemical products per year. This makes this facility one of the largest chemical plants in the world.
End products and their uses
The Chemical Plant receives their feedstock from the adjacent Refinery, including gas oil, cat gas, ethane & propane, higher olefins and powerformate. Products made at the site inlcude:
- Methyl Ethyl Ketone (paint, coatings and adhesives solvent)
- Secondary Butyl Alcohol (varnish and dewaxing solvent coatings)
- Diisopropyl Ether (fuel additives and extraction solvents)
- Isopropyl Alcohol (coatings, rubbing alcohol and electronics)
- Ethylene/Propylene (plastics and synthetic rubber)
- Vistalon® Rubber (auto hoses/seals, lube oil viscosity and roofing)
- Butadiene (synthetic rubber)
- Exxon Chlorobutyl (tubeless tires and pharmaceutical goods)
- Exxon Bromobutyl (tubeless tires)
- Isoprene (tape, diapers and packaging adhesives)
- Escorez® (rubber compounds, pipe wraps and road markings)
- Cyclics (high energy fuels, resin former and octane improver)
- Heart-cut Distillate (resin formers)
- Benzene (styrofoam products and nylon)
- Phthalic Anhydride (paints, fiberglass and plasticizer)
- Jayflex® Plasticizer/Phthalates (film/sheeting, wire/cable, flooring and injection moldings)
- Exxal® Alcohol (plasticizers, fuel additives and detergents)
- Neo Acids (herbicides, paint driers and initiators)
- Olefins (industrial detergents, lube oil additives and emulsifiers)
