ExxonMobil Process Research Laboratories (EMPR)
history
In 1927, 15 researchers, primarily faculty members from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, made up the original research team. The initial focus was on hydrogenation and alkylation technology for fuels applications.
EMPR today
Today, EMPR researchers focus on meeting stringent specifications required for ultra-clean burning fuels. There are approximately 150 employees and 70 contractors, including scientists, engineers, technicians, staff support and other professionals working at EMPR. Over the years, our researchers have been granted more than 4,000 U.S. patents that are used worldwide.
In 1994, our researchers developed an innovative process that would remove sulfur while maintaining high octane levels. In 1999, the SCANfining technology was made available for licensing. This ExxonMobil proprietary technology is now being applied worldwide in ExxonMobil refineries and has been licensed to other oil companies worldwide.
The 1999 merger of Exxon and Mobil created a powerhouse of even greater capabilities in process and catalysts technologies. The Baton Rouge - based EMPR supports ExxonMobil’s world-wide downstream business operations.
