Our community partnership
We are more than near neighbors to our community, its residents and businesses – we are community partners because the Baytown area is our home, too. ExxonMobil has a history of giving in the Baytown area because we know and understand the importance of being a good neighbor.
We strive to make a positive contribution and work to support and strengthen local communities – here in Baytown and wherever ExxonMobil operates.
Safety is our #1 priority
First, we believe that part of our commitment to the Baytown community is that we run safe and reliable operations. ExxonMobil Baytown holds the safety of our communities, near neighbors, employees and contractors as our #1 priority. Safety is a part of everything we do.
Also, being a part of a community means contributing as an active member in that community. We support education in our local elementary, junior and high schools through grants and program offerings, and we partner with our local college, Lee College, to educate and provide resources for students. We also support local agencies to aid them in assisting with the needs of the community.
Volunteerism in the community
Not only do we contribute financially, but perhaps most importantly, ExxonMobil Baytown employees spend thousands of hours each year volunteering in the Baytown area. Our employees are actively leading and supporting civic, neighborhood, business, school and other local associations. More than 1,000 employees actively volunteer each year, including getting involved with math and science in our local Baytown area & Mont Belvieu schools.
Below are just a few examples of our outreach:
- The ExxonMobil Baytown Area is a proud member of the Baytown Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the West Chambers County Chamber of Commerce. We strive to support their objectives in the community and participate in their events and fundraisers to benefit the communities where we live and operate.
- We are an annual participant and contributor to our local United Way campaign. In 2008, we raised more than $1.7 million for the Baytown Area United Way, and in 2009, we contributed $1.85 million, a new record for the site.
- Our site is a strong supporter of both the Goose Creek CISD and the Barbers Hill ISD math and science programs. We have more than 100 employees who volunteer as Science Ambassadors and Junior Achievement volunteers. They are charged with going into local classrooms to conduct science experiments, get the students excited about math and teach them about personal responsibility and finances.
- Our annual Community Summer Jobs Program employed ten students in the summer of 2009. The program was able to provide them a first job experience and a paycheck, as well as lend a helping hand to local agencies in need.
- We partner with Lee College, our local community college, to not only provide resources and funding, but also to provide opportunities for students to study and learn more about our industry. In continuing our advocacy of Lee College’s mission to educate, the ExxonMobil Process Technology Program was instated on the college’s campus. We believe that today’s students will be tomorrow’s industry leaders.
- We are strong supporters of our area’s Relay for Life, having raised $105,000 as a Triple Diamond Sponsor in 2009. We had nine ExxonMobil teams and received recognition for most money raised by a corporate team, a team, online by a team and by an individual.
- Our Mayor & ExxonMobil Green Team is held each summer, and in 2009, gave 30 students the opportunity for summer employment at the city and at local Baytown agencies.
- We are a sponsor of Baytown’s Eddie V. Gray Nature & Wetlands Center, which is a local center that educates about the environment and our need to protect it.
Contributions
As you can see, our surrounding communities are very important to us. It is where we live and where we operate. We strongly encourage and support our employees and retirees who choose to make their own contributions of time and money to community activities.
