In the United Kingdom, ExxonMobil is a major contributor to the economy:
- In 2007, we invested over £502 million in our UK upstream, downstream and chemical operations
- Our refinery at Fawley on Southampton Water is the largest in the UK, processing over 300,000 barrels of crude oil a day
- We provided jobs for over 8,000 employees and around 1,400 contractors
- We have an interest in nearly 60 producing oil and gas fields in the UK and hold the largest net licensed acreage on the UK continental shelf
- We are responsible for 10 per cent of the UK's total oil and gas production
- Each year, we pay around £5 billion in direct and indirect taxes and duties in the UK - about 1.1 per cent of the total UK government revenue. If the Chancellor had to find this money by other means, it would be equivalent to 1p on the basic rate of income tax
- In 2007, we invested around £2 million in community support.
In the United Kingdom we can roughly divide the organisation into 4 areas:
- Offshore Oil & Gas;
- Chemicals,
- Refining & Marketing;
- Services.
Offshore Oil and Gas. This part of the business, sometimes known as 'upstream', involves locating, extracting and marketing the raw products that we source. They are based mainly at Aberdeen and Leatherhead, Surrey.
In order to sustain this side of the organisation, we need talented individuals who can use their skills to help us advance in this challenging and exciting area of the business. The recruiting functions in 2008/09 within upstream include production and development, geoscience and gas and power marketing.
Chemicals are an integrated manufacturer and marketer of chemical products. They utilise crude oil and through a refining process extract and convert it into chemical products such as olefins, aromatics, fluids, synthetic rubber, polyethylene to name but a few, which are then sold.

Refining and Marketing. This area of the business, also known as 'downstream' covers the refining of crude oil to become end product fuels such petrol, Mobil 1 and diesel and marketing of the products in the UK & Ireland. we serve some one million retail customers every day through around 880 service stations
Functions within Refining and Marketing include Manufacturing and Distribution, Retail, Aviation, Marine and Lubricants who are based either at Fawley or Leatherhead offices.
