| | Requirements Degree Discipline: Any numerate Location: Leatherhead Scope of business
Within ExxonMobil's UK operations, the Finance Department - known within ExxonMobil as Controllers - is split into two distinct areas: Upstream Controllers, which is based in Leatherhead and Aberdeen; and Downstream Controllers, which is based in Leatherhead in Surrey.
Both Upstream and Downstream Controllers support their relevant ExxonMobil business line customers through the accounting, reporting and analysis of their commercial activities.
A graduate role in Controllers provides a firm foundation for career moves into Tax, Treasurers and other business service areas.
Typical career path
A new graduate in Controllers could get involved in markedly varied projects owing to the sheer size of the organisation. There is real responsibility from day one, which allows the successful candidate to gain a true business grounding.
In the Upstream, you would be working alongside our Exploration, Production and Gas & Power Marketing businesses providing support to both our operated and non-operated activities. This comprises monitoring costs, providing information to both local and headquarters management on performance versus targets, advising on processes and controls and providing performance analysis information and accounting support to all the functions supporting the Upstream UK organisation.
In the Downstream you would be working alongside our Marketing and Refining businesses. This could include monitoring costs, analysing returns on capital employed and giving advice on processes and controls. You could also get involved in providing performance analysis information and accounting support to all various business service groups supporting the UK organisations.
Operations
The oil business is not just about Production, Refining and Marketing. Controllers help ExxonMobil in the UK in its aim to become stronger and fitter, creating business advantages and ensuring that everyone in the company - and the shareholders - benefits. As such Controllers have critical roles to play: we make sure that financial assets are used effectively and that the company continues to grow and outperform our competitors. We also have an integral role to play in ensuring that all our business processes are controlled effectively and are operating in accordance with relevant laws and regulations as well as our own company policies and guidelines. Recent results show that we're doing well.
Training
We need good people who know how to keep a tight rein on our expenditure, while encouraging appropriate investment. We need individuals who can look behind the numbers, interpret them and provide value added analysis to business management. We need people who understand the needs of individuals and who can relate these needs to the company and the business as a whole. Most importantly, we need people who can balance business needs with those of the environment and the people within it. In return, we can offer you exposure to global business issues and will actively encourage and support you through your chosen route of either ACCA or CIMA qualification.
