Numeracy Test and Telephone Interview Tips

Everyone gets worried about Numeracy Tests and Telephone Interviews. To try and steady those nerves and prepare you as much as possible, please find my hints below.

Numeracy Test

Numeracy tests typically assess your ability to evaluate numerical data by using facts and figures presented in various statistical forms. Doing this in a limited time period can be daunting for some people so here are my top tips:

• Take the time to complete practice test papers (usually available from your Careers Service). Similar test papers can be found on various graduate recruitment websites.
• Read each question and answer carefully - sometimes multiple choice answers are deliberately similar so take time to check each option. Pay particular attention to things like the unit of measurement or the number of decimal places.
• Practice your mental arithmetic - especially how to calculate percentages and ratios quickly
• Read financial reports in newspapers and study tables of data
• Check how long you will have to complete the test and practise completing tests in this time.
• Prepare yourself on the day of the test - make sure you have a calculator and paper to work out answers. It is worth making sure that there is a clock visible when you complete the test so you can keep a track of time.
• Remember to work quickly and accurately - and good luck!

Telephone Interviews

Some people find telephone interviews to be a greater challenge than a face-to-face interview because you cannot see you interviewer. This doesn't have to be the case.

• Treat the telephone interview as a face-to-face interview.
• Speak to your Careers Service regarding mock telephone interviews.
• Choose a quiet room with good phone reception for the interview where you know that you will not be disturbed and feel comfortable.
• Have a good night's sleep before hand - it will ensure that you are alert during the interview
• Breathe deeply and relax - remember that the interviewer is just trying to find out about you - this is your most knowledgeable subject!
• Ensure that you have all of your application details to hand for the interview so you can refer back.
• Write down memory aids and notes before the interview of points that you want to raise or examples of situations.
• If you think of a question that you want to ask during the interview, jot it down so you don't forget it.
• Let the interviewer finish the question before you start to answer.
• Before ending the call do ask any questions that you have.
