Apprentice Training & Benefits Package

The Apprenticeship

The Apprenticeship is a three year programme designed to achieve a nationally recognised level of competency to SEMTA (Science, Engineering and Marine Training Association) NVQ level 3 standard.

During your first year, you will attend a basic engineering skills course at Southampton Engineering Training Association (SETA), Millbrook, Southampton. You will learn a range of practical skills which will enable you to qualify to SEMTA Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) level 2.

You will learn practical skills and theory from trained instructors at SETA. This broad based training covers a number of skills such as welding, fitting, electrical, machining and/or plating skills, and gives you experience and understanding of a wide variety of engineering practices. This period is the start to real 'hands on' training, in which you learn by DOING.

There's no standing by and watching for an Esso apprentice! Throughout your 3 years with the company you will complete two technical certificates. In Year 1 you will complete a Vocationally Related Qualification (Intermediate Certificate in Engineering and Technology) at SETA.

In Years 2 and 3 you will attend Southampton City College on day release for an EDEXCEL (Educational Excellence) BTEC certificate in either Mechanical Engineering or Electrical/Electronics depending on your trade discipline.

If you already have the right qualifications to be accepted on the HNC course or similar, you may be able to start in year 1!

You will also be trained in a wide range of IT skills, attend team building events, and other technical development courses. You will be part of a safety team and developed to become self-motivated and to achieve goals.

At the end of 3 years you will:

• Have qualified for a NVQ Level 3 in Maintenance Engineering or Fabrication and Welding Engineering
• Have achieved an advanced 'Modern Apprenticeship' (AMA)
• Have achieved a EDEXCEL BTEC Certificate
• Have achieved Esso Refinery trade tests
