The in-house practice of law with ExxonMobil and its affiliates compares to the practice of a major international law firm. There is no shortage of challenging, diversified and interesting legal work for ExxonMobil attorneys. Our attorneys are responsible for preventative law counseling and legal compliance programs, providing commercial and regulatory advice, negotiating and documenting transactions, handling litigation (including trial work), and identifying legal risks and assisting client companies in effectively managing those risks.

  • Formal Education
Our in-house Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program is tailored to the needs of our in-house lawyers and conducted on an almost monthly basis. You will be expected to develop and maintain a basic understanding of antitrust and competition laws, the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, applicable trade regulation laws, and environmental laws so that you can identify potential issues and consult with in-house specialist attorneys as needed. In addition to the internal CLE program, each Section holds periodic roundtable discussions on topics specific to the Section's work and clients. There are also external CLEs that enhance an attorney's professional competence and satisfy licensing requirements.
  • Mentoring
At ExxonMobil, your supervising attorney will be an experienced attorney who will help guide and train you as you assume more and greater responsibilities for the day-to-day work of an ExxonMobil attorney.
  • On-Site Education
As a new hire law school graduate, you can expect to join the Litigation Section headed by the Assistant General Counsel, Litigation. There, you will be assigned to 1 of 6 trial teams and immediately begin to make a contribution. You will be exposed to many facets of ExxonMobil's business and learn the importance of the development of facts in support of legal analysis while assisting in the representation of the company in litigation.
  • Other Training
The Law Department's lawyers are actively involved in many pro bono endeavors, in matters such as family law, bankruptcy, immigration/asylum, property and estate planning work. ExxonMobil attorneys are encouraged to participate in these opportunities as a means of developing as an attorney and a member of the community.
  • Early Career Development
You should expect to spend your first 2 to 3 years in one of the Litigation Section's diverse trial teams. You will work with first chair litigators on significant litigation as well as have the opportunity to handle cases on your own, with the assistance of your colleagues and mentors within your trial team, perhaps partnering with outside counsel in select areas. You will work with experienced attorneys, other new attorneys, seasoned paralegals and staff. After 2-3 years as a member of the trial team, you may expect to be assigned to a law group serving one of ExxonMobil's many diverse business units. There, you will gain more knowledge of the laws and legal issues that impact the particular business unit. You will have primary responsibility for assigned clients and will be encouraged to consult with in-house specialist attorneys as needed.
  • Continuing Career Development
Depending on business needs and your interests, skills and experience, you subsequently may be assigned to other sections of the Law Department and gain an in-depth working knowledge of ExxonMobil and its affiliate businesses. Opportunities in affiliate operations outside the US may also be presented
